Divided Loyalties

October 24th, 2011

So last night, on the way back to Maui from Honolulu, an idea for a new novel came walking into my head. Right now it’s feeling like a Trey Shiels novel — fast, dark, and a little over the top — but science fiction not fantasy.

Of course I’m already writing a novel, one that I’m sure will ignite! catch fire! start writing itself! at any moment now.

And I’m partway through a short story that I’ve spent a lot of time and effort on, and I really ought to get that finished.

And for years I’ve had a rule that I have to finish the current project before starting the next.

But of course 2011 has been a year for changing the rules.

Hmm….

One Response to “Divided Loyalties”

  1. Glen Kilpatrick Says:

You’ve stumbled over a rich vein (how’s that for mixed metaphors? :), tangentially speaking. Some thoughts on what for me leaps from your page, “changing the rules”:

    * It’s important to reimagine oneself _every_ year, to “question assumptions”.
    * Youth and old age are physically chronological, but they also have a mental component. To be open to change while at the same time retaining the wisdom of the ages (yours and others’), that’s the magic right there.
    * A friends refers to leaping, and discovering the net to be there. That’s the kind of confidence that seems necessary to live the good life.

I’m overly comfortable with mainstream Linux myself; Monday I strayed far, far from between the white lines, and my test drive doesn’t work, yet. But it will…; by the time I’ve come out the other side, I’ll know much more, have enhanced my professional skills (when I started this, I didn’t know of what use it might represent besides a mere lark). Pushing the envelope, is good. When you fail, you learn; when you succeed, push harder.
