Chapter

8

Notice that the first words of the first paragraph are enclosed by span tags with the class name "firstwords." I created this class in the style sheet, and I used it to replace whatever class was automatically generated here, because it's easier for me to think about it as "firstwords" than "none2" or some such. ALSO notice the div tags surrounding this paragraph. The div class known as "s1" should be exactly the same as "s2" except that "s1" does not have indented paragraphs. Since I want only the first paragraph to be different, I close the div tag for "s1".

Here we begin the second paragraph. Everything until the section break can be enclosed in a single set of div tags of class "s2," at least if your layout is simple and basic. Sometimes you'll see lots of extra div tags that appear for no apparent reason, opening and closing more "s2" divs. These don't seem to affect the display, but since I can't abide sloppy code I use a search and replace to take them out. but it's up to you.

More paragraphs follow.

Etc., etc., etc., until the next paragraph brings us to a section break. Notice the section break is wrapped in a div tag of class "s." In the style sheet you can adjust the margin for "s" to make the blank line wider or more narrow. Mine are fairly wide. The "sectionblank" tag doesn't do anything. It doesn't even exist in my stylesheet. But it's there in the manuscript if I ever decide I want to style that paragraph, maybe with an ornament or something.

Here we are at another first paragraph, this one following a section break, so the paragraph is not indented. I like to style my first words here, just like at the chapter start. Whether you want to or not is of course up to you.

More paragraphs follow, all wrapped within the "s2" div tags.

Etc., etc., until we come to the chapter end, and close the div tag.
