Word came today from narrator Kevin T. Collins that he’s just finished recording the audio version of The Red.

The Red will be released in simultaneous hardcover, mass-market paperback, and ebook editions by Simon & Schuster/ Saga Press. And it will be released in audio by Audible.

Four formats! That’s a first for me.

And this will be my first-ever audiobook. I’ve had a few short stories issued in audio format thanks to Lightspeed Magazine, but never a novel. I’m looking forward to it.

Just a short note… In case you missed it, there is a podcast edition of my recent story “The Way Home,” which was dual published last week in Lightspeed Magazine and the anthology Operation Arcana.

I had a chance to listen to the podcast yesterday. It’s really well done, though I have to admit there are parts when I was thinking, “No, no. The emphasis wasn’t meant to be like that!” Yes, we all have our different ways of interpreting dialogue.

Operation Arcana, an anthology of military fantasy stories edited by John Joseph Adams, is out today in both print and ebook editions.

The anthology includes stories by T.C. McCarthy, Genevieve Valentine, Myke Cole, Elizabeth Moon, and many more, including me.

My story is called “The Way Home” and it’s available to read online at Lightspeed Magazine. There’s also an audio version available at that same link, if you prefer to listen.

Just out in the April edition of Lightspeed is my newest story “Codename: Delphi.”

As a novelist who is constantly battling to keep word counts reasonable, this story is a triumph for me because it really is a SHORT story — it’s only 4,100 words — even though there is a lot going on.

“Codename: Delphi” is the first — and so far only — short story I’ve completed as part of the the Clarion West Write-a-thon. It’s part of The Red: First Light‘s story world, and has just sold to Lightspeed Magazine!

This is my second short story sale of 2013.

The first story sold this year, “Halfway Home,” will be published online in the September issue of Nightmare Magazine.

This is the first time I’ve had two stories debut in the same month. Story #1 was “Nahiku West,” a police procedural in a nanotech-saturated story world. Story #2 is part of the August edition of Lightspeed Magazine. The story has been available as part of Lightspeed’s ebook edition, but starting today it’s available to read free online — or you can listen to the audio book version!

As I’m sure I’ve mentioned before, I stopped writing short fiction at the end of the last century, but last fall I took it up again. The second story I wrote, “Nightside on Callisto,” has now become my first original short fiction to reach publication since my 2000 Nebula-award winner.

This feels like a very significant milestone for me.

I’m very pleased to announce the sale of a second short story to Lightspeed Magazine. It’s called “A Moment Before It Struck” and is a prequel story set in the world of my Stories of the Puzzle Lands novels.

One thing that particularly pleases me about this story is that it’s only 4,300 words! Yes, I know that sounds shallow and trivial, but my typical length for short fiction runs between 7,000 and 9,500 words, so it’s a personal victory to come up with a solid story at a much shorter length.

The other aspect of this story that I especially like is its structure, which is more formal and less linear than what I generally do. It’s very gratifying to try a new approach and have it work out.

The publication date for “A Moment Before It Struck” hasn’t been set yet, but my first Lightspeed story, “Nightside On Callisto” will be in the May issue.
