The Red: First Light — go get it!
March 11th, 2013The ebook vendors have gotten really efficient, and The Red: First Light is already available in ebook form at all the usual places. So now is the time! Go grab a sample from your favorite vendor, or buy the book!
The Red: First Light is an original, never-before-published novel, and it’s my first adult science fiction novel in ten years. It’s a near-future thriller, with a boots-on-the-ground military theme. Here’s the back cover copy:
“There Needs To Be A War Going On Somewhere”
Lieutenant James Shelley commands a high-tech squad of soldiers in a rural district within the African Sahel. They hunt insurgents each night on a harrowing patrol, guided by three simple goals: protect civilians, kill the enemy, and stay alive—because in a for-profit war manufactured by the defense industry there can be no cause worth dying for. To keep his soldiers safe, Shelley uses every high-tech asset available to him—but his best weapon is a flawless sense of imminent danger…as if God is with him, whispering warnings in his ear. (Hazard Notice: contains military grade profanity.)
🙂 Some of you have been entertained by my “Hazard Notice.” This is an attempt to ward off potential readers who give books one-star reviews because the book contains the word “fuck.” Seriously. This has happened.
ANYWAY…if you read the book, if you like the book, please consider spreading the word. Recommend it on your favorite social media, consider writing a blog post, or review it at Amazon. Most books are sold through personal recommendations — word of mouth. So if you like The Red: First Light I’d really appreciate it if you could help get the word out. Thank you!
The print book is still in process, but here are links to ebook vendors — and thanks again!

Hi Linda. Hehe. Would I be correct in assuming it was Limit of Vision that the disgruntled reviewer was reviewing? It was the second of your books that I read, and to someone like me who can be a bit taken aback by certain language ***when he’s not expecting it***, it was a bit surprising after having just finished the beautifully profanity-free Memory. Rather than writing a bad review about LOV though, though, I persevered and ended up truly adoring the book. Anyway, it’d not a bad precaution you’re taking :-). Regards, Robert

>>the beautifully profanity-free Memory<<
Yes, see, I can write without profane language, so long as it’s appropriate to book and characters! 🙂
Robert, thanks for putting up with the language in LoV. I actually went back through the manuscript after I saw that review and counted the uses of the word “fuck.” Seven times, mostly in the beginning when everything is falling apart. Methinks that reader was a bit too sensitive. But yes–if it’s an issue for a reader, best to know it’s there ahead of time. LOTS more of it in TR:FL.

Loving the profanity so far! Twenty percent into THE RED: FIRST LIGHT. Great dialogue and tech. I’ve only gotten two people to read your books so far, and one other to “eventually” read one. I think I can convince one more with this current book. It is more his style than your other science fiction/fantasy books. Then again, I don’t know many readers so this is a pretty sizable number for me.
Cheers on the new release!

Thanks Eddie! It’s great to know you like it so far, and I really appreciate your efforts to spread the word. I’m in a situation pretty similar to yours, in that people around here don’t seem to read much science fiction. I guess I’m an alien in my own land. 🙂
I hope the book continues to work for you!

Just a note:
I’m looking at the Amazon(US) page for the print edition and there is no “Product Details” listed on the page the way there is on the e-book page, so it’s not obvious what the page count or book size is.
Curious people want to know. HA!

Yikes, I’m wrong. The info is at the bottom of the page. I’m all topsy turvy here. HA!

🙂 Yep, 352 pages, plus the blank page the printer adds to the end. Trade paperback size, 8.5×5.5 inches.
