Linda Nagata: the blog at Hahví.net

Aloha ‘Oe

Very sad to learn of the passing of writer Jeffrey A. Carver. I don’t think I ever met him in person, but he became a friend through our shared work at the writer’s cooperative Book View Café. This is his website: https://www.starrigger.net/

Oh no! Not Jeff as well! We’ve been losing far too many good people over the past few years. This is really sad news.

I also never met him in person, but knew him well online ever since our days in the Compuserve SF community, back in the mid-to-late 90s. I even ordered a bunch of his books directly from him back then (I did this with quite a few authors on Compuserve, back in the days before Amazon and Ebay – international shipping costs were not nearly as bad back then), and became a bit of a fan of both his Chaos Chronicles and Star Rigger series.

    What happened? Was he ill?

Yes. He talked about his diagnosis here on his blog. He had Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis, which ultimately required a lung transplant. He survived the surgery but had a series of strokes according to the family’s post on Facebook. This was last August. He passed just a few days ago.

I’m really sad to hear this. Jeff was a nice guy, and I enjoyed his writing. I had no idea that he had passed away or even that he had been in bad health until I read your above post. I used to be on top of every little thing that happened in the SF community, but have been losing touch a lot in recent years, mostly due to my own ill-health and advancing age. So a lot of news passes me by these days.

I’m not suffering from anything quite as severe as the illness that caused poor Jeff’s passing, but my own health problems have certainly been severe enough to stop me in my tracks and bring about a lot of lifestyle changes, especially over the past decade or so. I seem to be spending more and more time nowadays on managing pain and sorting out ever-increasing mobility problems than on actual hobbies and enjoying life. It’s all I can do these days to find the time and energy to read the very occasional SF story. My memory, concentration, and focus are all shot to hell, and have all been declining drastically in recent years.

Getting old sucks, and it’s even worse when we’re also afflicted by age-related bad health, especially (as in my case) after a lifetime relatively free of such problems. 🙁

Ah, Philip, I’m so sorry to hear you’re not doing as well you ought, and I hope you can overcome some of these issues and go on to more years of enjoyable life. As for keeping up . . . way back when I used to eagerly await each issue of Locus, as well as a newsletter or two from writing groups, just to get news of people and the goings-on in the industry. I felt starved for information. Now it’s the opposite. There is too much and it takes too much time, so I don’t really keep up with anything writing related. The irony of the information age!
    Take care of yourself, please.
